Langerado : The Concerts

Here’s a couple of comments on each concert I saw. Good/bad, audience, etc.

THURSDAY

Les Claypool - Awesome live. Heard so much stuff about Claypool, about him being an awesome bassplayer, etc. We were a bit far in the back, but I think he was wearing a pig mask? Sheesh. Good stuff. I liked the more funky stuff he played, which was a couple of songs. Good introduction to the festival, for real. No pictures, though, because it was rainy and digital cameras + rain = upset Jen.

FRIDAY

Brett Dennen - went to the see these guys because my best friend had a song up on her MS page that I liked. Really the only reason. And I LOVED these guys. So chill, laidback, happy music. Gets you bopping, sing-a-longie, and all fronted by a guy that looks like Chuckie from Rugrats, all growed up. Their guitar player isn’t too shabby. I liked how he brought out the lap guitar and played it unobtrusively with the rest of the band. And the whole band was having a good time playing, which I think is really important. I’ve seen bands before where they all look pissed off that their there. These guys were happy, so the crowd was feeling good and not obnoxious, too. Definitely looking more into these guys.

Sam Bush - I read the artist info in the booklet, and Sam Bush sounded good. So we headed over there and were completely stoked. Good bluegrassy music. All these guys were rocking and rolling, too, total positive vibes from the whole stage. Sam was a talker, too, he talked to the audience a bit, which I like. Also checking these guys out.

The Wailers - I thought I saw these guys at Bonnaroo, and then I realized that I saw Ziggy Marley. Good classic reggae…and Matisyahu got on stage with them to sing ‘No Woman No Cry’, which was pretty awesome. Songs were a bit drawn out, though.

G. Love and Special Sauce - only saw these guys for a few minutes before we got bored and headed elsewhere. I think they are probably good listening electronically, but live…..bleh. Wasn’t digging it. It was so chill I didn’t want to watch shit. I just wanted to lay in a hammock.  I’ve been wanting to see these guy live for some time, because I heard awesome things. And their on JJ’s record label, worth checking out, and I’ve heard their stuff before on some of JJ’s surf soundtracks. But….bleh.

311 - This was the surprise concert of the festival, like the White Stripes at the Roo last year. Never seen either live, and they both fucking rocked my socks off. I like 311, but I’m not a diehard fan who knows all their music. The crowd went nuts for these guys, and about 2 rows in front of me, there was even a mosh pit. I kept cringing every time a guy got thrown towards us. I didn’t know whether to hide behind Wade, or get in front of him.  311 was super energetic. Like, they have serious stamina, and try really hard to put on the best show. I fell in love with their bass player, because not only was he freaking cute and bit his tongue a lot, but he was wearing a black basketball shirt, big white basketball shorts, black socks, and big white sneakers. And he kept like jigging his feet around in a way that I found quite adorable. And his skills aren’t too bad, either.  Had a good time here.

The Roots - came on 30 minutes late. After that, I didn’t really want to see them anymore, and the first song they opened with sucked, so we left. I had seen them at the Roo anyways, they were much better there.

Beastie Boys - I think Wade enjoyed this more than me, because he’s the fan, and I’m one mildly knows the Boys. The crowd at this show was the worst. It was like everyone was hopped up on the same crap that made them belligerent and nasty. I didn’t enjoy this show so much, because of the crowd, and I was super tired. According to Wade, they played a good mix of new and old stuff. They did Intergalactic and Sabotage, but did some of their jazzy stuff from Ill Communication and their new album.

SATURDAY

The Avett Brothers - got canceled. Stuck in a traffic jam.

Citizen Cope - chill music anyhow, so this made for a chill show. Not much energy here, but I had a good time. There were a lot more CC fans there than I expected. He played some new stuff, and some of his more popular songs.  And honestly, I’m not even sure why he plays the guitar.

Ben Folds - we wanted to see but missed to go back to the camp and get changed into something warmer. Heard a bit here and there, but that was it. Damon will kill me.

Thievery Corporation - definitely one of the best shows the whole festival. Equipped with 3 different singers, 3 guys who sung and rapped, and a freaking belly dancer. Nice and loud, good crowd, and great combination of older stuff with new, groovy stuff we could dance to.

Matisyahu - huge crowd for this one, so we ended up chilling in the back. We didn’t stay for the whole show, because what we heard wasn’t what I was expecting, and by that, I thought the show would be more energetic, louder, etc.

REM - totally thought we were going to see REM, and we totally skipped on it. Wade realized that he pretty much didn’t like REM, and I wasn’t too bothered by it. I like REM, but I’m not a fan who has followed their music since the early 90’s or anything, so we headed back to camp and listened to them while eating tomato soup. The first thing we heard was Michael Stipe say “Children of Langerado….come to me!” Weird.

SUNDAY

Keller Williams - word of mouth had us check out Keller Williams. I guess he’s impressive because he does all his music by himself, but that doesn’t necessarily mean his music is that great. I might have better luck listening to his studio stuff.

Minus the Bear - saw these guys by special request of a mutal friend of ours, who really digs these guys. The crowd here was mellow and really young, and the music was decent, but nothing to write home about.

Ani Di Franco - definitely an awesome way to end our Langerado experience. I told Wade beforehand that the crowd here was going to be a horde of women, ecstatic to see Ani in all her super-woman splendor, and he was still surprised. There was tons of women there in skirts, short hair, pink hair, dreads, etc, all dancing around like fairies (I quote Wade) and going wild and singing EVERY single lyric to all the songs she played. Not only did I enjoy the songs I knew, but Ani played some new ones, about Hurricane Katrina, being a mum, and being happy, that were super fun and thoughtful. Makes me want to break out my Ani tracks all over again. Crowd here was great. Happy women, and lots of kids, here, too. I danced around the most at this concert compared to the rest, and had an awesome time. Rode out of Langerado on a feminist high, which is always good times.

Minnie Driver - Seastories

The other night I was watching Leno (again, an inspiration for a post) when Minnie Driver was in the hotseat chatting with our favorite skunky late night host. The show went to commercial, and then, to my surprise, came back with Minnie Driver on stage about to perform. Musically. What the fuck? I didn't see that one coming.

And guess what. Unlike most actor-turned-musicians, this chica is good. Like, really good. I love her voice, and I fell head over heels in love with the song she and her band performed. It's called "Beloved". I've been singing it ever since. I chalk it up a bit to her being British (ahem, go England). I've always loved Minnie Driver anyways, if not for her acting, but for her incredible laugh. It makes me giggle ridiculously.

And, this is her second album! Sheesh.

It must be crappy to be compared to your former career in reviews, Minnie, but thats what happens. Your fellow actors have tried to the music thing and sucked at it, so we have to be cautious when you do it. But don't worry, love, you've done well.

Anyways,

the song was sung well, lyrically very good, and not overdone. Simple in it's simpleness and beautiful at the same time, if you get what that means.

Right, so anyways, I've now got the album, yay, and I'm very much enjoying it. I'd love for you to love it too, so check out these MP3s, or better yet, go out and get the bloody album.

To summarize:

I liked her before, when I just knew her as an actress.

She turns out to be a kickass musician.

And she lives in a trailer park.

And the boyfriend thinks her music is good.

So basically, all systems go. You'll like.

Bonnaroo Pictures - Max Sessions

Well, I finally have all the pictures together. I took a crapload of pictures at Bonnaroo on my camera, and I also stole my mates’ cameras to take pictures for them when they were otherwise “occupied” and/or I felt like snatching their camera anyway. So, all these pictures are owned by myself, and my friends Sean and Eric. Please don’t snatch them.

Also, I have a Picasa Web Album up and running so everyone can access them at their leisure. Be nice, please.

Here a few to sample, and since there’s over 300 pictures, you’ll have to look at the rest over at the web album.

The White Stripes - Icky Thump

Since having the experience of The White Stripes rocking my socks on the last night at Bonnaroo, I've been on a total White Stripes kick. I've fallen in love with Icky Thump, and am working on the rest of their albums. The White Stripes is a band who I always thought seemed pretty interesting, but never got around to making the effort to listen to them. Which is understandable in my case, I think, as I have a stack of music backed up. Yes, I know. I'm horrible.

The album is totally fun, and so easy to dance to, as well as jump around like an idiot. I do that quite well. My significant other has told me it has some serious British-blues going on, and I think I agree. A little reminiscent of some Zeppelin I've heard. You can definitely hear some Nashville stylin's going on there, too. I'm afraid I'm horribly inarticulate when it comes to bands I'm grooving to and in love with. You'll have to excuse me.

Some favorite tracks are: Catch Hell Blues, I'm Slowly Turning Into You, A Martyr For My Love For You, Icky Thump, and 300 MPH Torrential Outpour Blues. I'm sure that will change over time, but for now, I'm really digging those.

Basically, it's fun, noisy, bluesy and rocky at the same time, and has a pizzazz that makes it special and different.

So, here are some select MP3s for you to rock out to. Enjoy.

Shiny Toy Guns - We Are Pilots

We Are Pilots - Shiny Toy Guns

Shiny Toy Guns Official Website

Label :  Universal Records

So, I have a biology final in about forty-five minutes, and then heading up to SLC to find a place to live [what is this, a blog?  I promise kitten pictures next time].  The point is I'm going to see Shiny Toy Guns tonight and haven't breathed a word of it to you beautiful public people.  I don't have a lot of time, so I'll just throw a few words at you about the STG album, We Are Pilots.
Shiny Toy Guns make some weighty claims about originality and the pursuit of perfection as it relates to their music.  To be sure they are rather meticulous, they scrapped the entire recording of Pilots in order to attack it again using newer technology [twice].  That's dedication, no doubt.
I'm operating under the assumption that you all are familiar with the lead-off single "Le Disko", so we won't concern ourselves to much with that.  I would like to dispel come misconceptions you may have about the band based on the song in question.  I do this because I assumed certain things as well.
First of all, you might think that this is Carah Faye's band.  It's not.  And I don't mean that in the way that technically Garbage is Butch Vig's band, not Shirley Manson's.  I mean that "Le Disko" is the only song where she has sole control of vocals.  She's prominent on a few, but all the songs were written by some combination of Chad Petree, Stephen Petree and/or Jeremy Dawson.  The Dawson/Petree combo have been making music together for ages and only recently added Carah Faye and drummer Mikey Marting to round out the sound and aid in live performances.
Also, you may expect the album to be full of what I think of as "nu-disco" [yes, I'm borrowing from the term nu-metal because I went through an awkward phase in high school].  The songs actually have quite a variety of styles, leaning heavily on what might be termed nu-new wave [making up names for genres is fun!].  The overall vibe is a lot like the album cover, pretty open, kind of sparse and oddly beautiful.  Prime examples of those two thoughts are "Rainy Monday" and "When They Came for Us" respectively.

Sorry for the severe lack of links and such, but I've gotta hit the road very, very soon.

Final verdict: Good listens.  Not as groundbreaking as I'm sure they hoped it'd be, but well worth a good listen.  "Don't Cry Out" is probably my favourite.  Enjoy the samples and I'll tell you how they are live once I'm back to normality.

Review : The Noisettes - What’s The Time, Mr. Wolf?

The Noisettes - What's the Time Mr. Wolf

The Noisettes Official Website

Label : Motown Records

So, whats up, Noisettes? The hype, you say? I'd have to agree.

The Noisettes are pretty decent. Nothing overly original. Good beats and riffs and the lot.  In doing some reading about them on the good ol' interweb, I've found that there is so much hype its hard to focus on the music. Its like, "Hey, check out this crazy 3-bit band from the U.K! The lead singer is a girl and plays the bass, and the drummer played for 8 hours everyday in high school! OMFG!"

Yeah, big deal. I've never been one to pay attention to the intricacies of band bios and history. The music is whats important. So, saying that, lets talk about the music.

Lead singer, Shingai, rocks the mike, so to speak. I do love her voice; an odd mix of soul and screetchy punk-rock. Most of the songs on the album are pretty catchy, and an excellent roaring listen. The album is strangely conventional, or typical–no frontiers being breached here, but after a couple of listens I'm pretty hooked on the album.

Some favorites: Scratch Your Name, Don't Give Up, and Nothing To Dread. The Count of Monte Cristo very much like another song I know, and I'm thinking its PJ Harvey.

Final Verdict: As D. would say, ignore the hype. For real. Give it a listen and HEAR the music, and make a decision. You may be pleasantly surprised.
