Shameless Self-Promotion // Birds Without

An interesting thing has come to my attention regarding my band, Birds Without, playing at the Avalon on Saturday.  It was an exciting prospect from the beginning, playing at a venue where I’d actually been to see a band I’d actually heard of before (I saw Love You Long Time, Dave also saw Eisley there, but I missed that one) and having people in the crowd who didn’t ride there with somebody playing that night, but it just got more exciting.  Turns out the show will be taped and available on ComCast’s On Demand Presents Band Wagon LIVE.  This is copy/pasted from the Avalon website:

ComCasts On Demand Presents Band Wagon LIVE. They will be filming live tonight at this show! Come show your local music support tonight on ComCast!

Tickets are ten bucks, doors at 6:30, show at 7:00.  The lineup will be Going Second, Uncomfortable Silence, Birds Without, The Desert, and our friends in Arienette, with whom we’ve played a few times.
I’m really excited to play this show, guys.  We’ve got a few new songs* that we’ve worked out, Dave got a drum kit, so this will be his first show on that instead of the bongos, and we haven’t played in a few weeks, I’m getting the itch (or maybe it’s just this Mountain Dew I had for breakfast).

Anyhow, come out and support us and Arienette and these other fine bands.  You can even do it without going to the Avalon (3605 South State Street)!  You can watch us at home (at least that’s my understanding of how On Demand works, I’m simple in the ways of cable and satellite teevee).

*”New” here meaning new to me.  Ned put a band together so he could play some of his newer, more experimental songs live, and then Dave (Ned’s brother) and Mick (who went to high school with Ned and played bass for him occasionally back then) got Ned interested in all these old songs he wrote in high school.  We’re working on rounding out the set, and even with all this old material, we’ve written one song since the band formed as such.

New Cure Single // “the Only One”

The Cure released the first single from their upcoming (and as-yet untitled) thirteenth studio album today, withThe friggin' Cure, ya'll! at least three more to accompany it. A song will be released on the 13th of every month leading up to the release of the 13th album on the 13th day of the 13th month September. 13 13 13. Robert Smith is making sure this album gets the attention that 2004’s The Cure didn’t by making a big to do about things. Which I appreciate.

The new single sounds like a Cure single, which I guess is the best we can hope for. Seems like every album after Wish in ‘92 is increasingly ignored, but Robert Smith is very excited about this one. It’s a double album, and he’s arranged to have it sold at a regular album price because it’s a decent thing to do. And because he likes the album. And because people aren’t about to pay double album prices ever again. Sound fair? Tune in next month for the next single, “Freak Show.”

Bonus Thingy!! I’m also including and MP3 for the song “The 13th” because I think it’s funny that they’ve already used that title so it can’t get mixed into this current rush of 13.

Rebuttal @ Why Live, Colin Meloy?

I…but…but you…and it’s…what? Jen, you hurt my heart. Why a live album? Because it’s a live album!! There are covers and unreleased songs and there’s stage banter and it’s live! I don’t know what else you need. Not only that, but it’s a live solo album which means there are different arrangements by necessity. It proves the music is mutable and that putting a song on wax is not the end of its evolution. It proves that if a song is worth singing, it’s worth exploring and doing it right. The live album, if done right, is lightning in a bottle, capturing a moment shared by a room full of people on a night. Live music is a fleeting thing, the live album is an attempt to grasp at the fleeting moment.

And as long as I’m commenting on yesterday’s posts (I’ll do one with music soon, I swear), you’ve proven a theory about Jack Johnson for me. When Sleep Through Static was released it jump right up to the freaking top of every chart applicable. I swear, all of ‘em. I was absolutely baffled because, well, most people who don’t hate Jack Johnson have a hard drive so full of various Jack Johnson tracks and Jack Johnson & Ben Harper tracks and Jack Johnson live bootlegs and songs that aren’t Jack Johnson but are attributed to him, &c. that they don’t really need to run right out and buy fourteen more songs that sound just like all the other ones on their computer, but they did! Jack Johnson is extremely frustrating to me, especially since I still get sucked into most of his songs. Even played “Banana Pancakes” at a wedding last week.

Finally, regarding Juno, I’ve not seen hard candy, but Ellen Page’s character is infinitely endearing. Or at least not a ball buster. It’s worth your time, Jen. And now I’m done saying what I should’ve said in an email. Yay for making it public!!

Podcasting Us

We’ve got some new stuff going on here:

I’ve finally found a theme I freakin’ like. At one point I thought I’d have to build my own from scratch, and I knew that would either never happen or it would happen horribly. This one is good, give props to its maker by clicking on the link at the bottom of the page. We’re podcasting. For right now the podcasts are simply the mp3s we post. PodPress makes this easier, and also gives you access to our mp3s in iTunes. When I get the link from iTunes I’ll be posting it here and you can subscribe to it at the bottom. I’ve also burned it through Feedburner, for extra cool stuff.

I’ve finally found some good new music to talk about. Yippie kay ay.

Happy Mondays again.

Where I’ve been, pt. II
Playing guitar

So, I'm coming up on being a full month behind with things.  I guess I'll survive.  But I come bearing exciting month-old news: I have now been sworn in as an official Aquabat!  Wandering past MC Lars' MySpace page I spied a tour date in Utah, at the Venue, no less, and I was immediately intrigued at the prospect of seeing MC Lars perform a full set (if you'll recall, when I saw him on the Nerdcore Tour, his set was cut short to make room for Steel Train), so I made my plans.  It wasn't until a few days before the show that I discovered that Lars would be opening for the Aquabats! which simply cemented my determination to attend.  Lars was great, still throwing out horrible jokes between songs ("Man, ya'll are so live, you must be throwing copper"), inciting a Tetris mosh, and not having to skip through songs, which was nice.  My one huge complaint about Lars this time around wasn't his fault, it's just that moshing is a lot more okay at The Venue than at Kilby Court, so when the drums kicked in on "Hot Topic is Not Punk Rock" that was my cue to exodus to the back of the club.  Unfortunately my glasses didn't make it, may their sacrifice not be forgotten.
As for the Aquabats!, they put on a fantastic show.  I think they're one of those bands that don't really need to release any new music, just tour on what they've got.  So, I've told you about MC Lars already, you should know about the Aquabats! by now, so I'll let you in on the big surprise of the show: Love You Long Time.  Despite their unfortunate association with both regular BYU and BYU Idaho (they claim origins in Provo, UT and Rexburg, ID), they are highly entertaining with little or no cringe-worthy moments (the city of Provo kinda makes me cringe generally, though).  They sport matching, brightly coloured garb and play stuff that would not sound out of place coming out of a house party in 1993, but they do it in such a way that you can't help but get into it.  Giant boomboxes, goofy rapping, backflips and all around good times.  I don't know if you'll be able to see them much outside the Utah/Idaho area, but if the opportunity comes, I endorse participation.

I was recently torn between seeing Saves the Day perform an acoustic set at Kilby Court or seeing the Cure in whatever big venue the Cure play here in Utah.  This conflict was resolved for me when the Cure postponed because the new album isn't finished yet.  So I get StD in October and the Cure in May (I think).  Also coming up on my concert agenda is the Smashing Pumpkins at the end of September and the X96 Big Ass Show in early October.  And I swear I'll get around to talking to you wonderful folk more often.
Love and Squalor,

-D.

Jen and Damon present - Otherwise Occupations

Hey guys, whats going on, another somewhat rhetorical question goes here, etc….

Some of you may be wondering why we haven't updated in so long, and with less frequency. Well, I'll tell you. Here's an update on me and Damon:

Damon got an internship at X96 in SLC, Utah, a pretty kickass radio station. Here's a blurb on his royal status from the X96 website

Damon

Damon is not single, as one might assume because of the beard.  His girlfriend (who is awesome) quite likes it, actually, and would invite you all to stop giving him guff about it.  He refuses to accept your guff, anyway.  Damon is originally from nowheres-in-particular, where he currently resides; works at a bookstore, which is awesome; will one day be crowned King of All Media (assuming Howard Stern steps down and/or is not immortal); adores fried mushrooms, 'Nilla Coke, and General Tso's chicken; went to high school in England; and is more punk than you.  Apparently he loves semicolons as well.  We invite you to join us in pitying the fools who missed his radio show, The Exposure Box, on Snow College's KAGJ.  'Twas kick-awesome.  Contary to popular belief, he did not fail his most recent attempt at English 2010.  To find more out about what he does with his ears, read what he writes at www [dot] lovethemusicreviews [dot] com.

So between work and his internship, and his lack of computer access, Damon is in a kind of LTM remission for now.

I, on the other hand, am still working, as I was over summer, and am back in school for the Fall 2007 semester, full-time. Not only am I lacking the time to update LTM as frequently as I'd like, I also haven't been handed any kickass music recently, unless I've scoured the net for it myself. My next post will more than likely be on a Buena Vista Social Club album, that features Latin-like remixes of some Jack Johnson and Coldplay, to name a few.

IvyI also got a cat, Ivy. While that isn't particularly time-consuming, I do find it distracting to sit down and write a post and then hear my pantry being ransacked so she can hunt my recycled plastic bags.

But, both me and Damon are doing well, and we promise to be back in action as soon as we can get our shit together. Until then, keep emailing us with your suggestions and comments, and they'll be filed for address later.

Love the Music, and yourself,

Jen
