Elika is a two-bit group from Brooklyn. By two-bit, I literally mean two-bit. Two people. Seems The White Stripes have started something.
They’ve got a new album out called ‘Trying Got Us Nowhere’. It’s got 7 trancey-ass tracks, vocals that remind me strongly of Madonna, lots of keyboards and electronica-like drums. I particularly like ‘To The End’ and ‘The Whip’ on the album. While it’s not a super-duper great album, I think for a debut it’s pretty promising. Give ‘em a spin.

Um, this song is pretty sweet.

I was working on a project for my wonderful LtM counterpart, Jen, when I came across some really weird covers using Skreemr. Turns out nobody has a regular album version of “Mr. Crowley” on Internet, but they do have Ozzy covering “Stayin’ Alive.” Yeah, that “Stayin’ Alive.” This simply seemed strange at first, until I thought about the history of things, the Bee Gees released “Stayin’ Alive” back in ‘76 while Ozzy was still with Black Sabbath. I really don’t want to ponder the significance of this, but I hope it’s no more than, “Hey, wouldn’t it be funny to get Ozzy to sing a disco song? We could even get Frank Zappa’s kid to play guitar! It’s so wacky!” Those are my hopes.
After I found that, I had to do a little research and discovered that Dweezil and his brother Ahmet covered Britney Spears’ breakout hit “Baby, One More Time” for the film Ready to Rumble. This doesn’t strike me as nearly so odd, since it’s been done by Travis and Fountains of Wayne, but I think it serves the post well.
Still could not find the album version of “Mr. Crowley.”

Last night, in the space of maybe 30 minutes, I had four people (including a man on the radio) tell me about the new Weezer video, “Pork and Beans”. Dave picked up his laptop & watched it, asked if I had. Deven says he saw it on Boing Boing. Taryn texts me and tells me it’s got the “Shoes” guy. Then Corey O’Brien plays the song and invites us to go to YouTube right now and check out the video. After that, I got the idea and watched it as soon as I was at a computer with speakers. Then, this morning, my dad called to tell me there’s a new Weezer video. And now I bring it to you, though it’s fairly obvious that I don’t have to. I’m sure you already know. Or know somebody who knows and is all, “OMG it’s got the Numa Numa Guys/Diet Coke & Mentos thing/that “Chocolate Rain” weirdo/K-Fed/that dreamboat Scott Shriner!” And now you’ve heard it from your friendly neighbourhood spider-blog.

P.S. I’m a little embarrassed at how many of these I knew. And also how many I now know because I looked things up on Wikipedia afterwards.
