Thanksgiving Leftovers that never made it up because the server was down, happy late t-day.

I don’t know if our FTP could handle all eighteen minutes of Arlo Guthrie’s vaguely-Thanksgiving classic “Alice’s Restaurant Massacree,” so in honour of the occasion I give you something a little more depressing: “Styrofoam Plates” by Death Cab for Cutie!
Have some Hand Bird!
Next time I do a Death Cab post, I’ll try not to be such a downer about it.

Say Hi (To Your Mom) Kilby Court 11.13.2007

And now that I’ve gotten enough of the Dresden Dolls website for a few day, I’m going to tell you about the Say Hi concert I went to on Tuesday. Ned is a big fan of Say Hi, from back when they were Say Hi To Your Mom (that means he’s better than you). I’d never hear them before and expected another quirky pop band worshiping at the altar of Weezer. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing at all, but there are a lot of bands like that, and I already like a few of them, I just can’t sit down and decide Okay, Ultimate Fakebook is catchier than Motion City Soundtrack, but MCS has better lyrics, I’ll keep them. Ozma’s early stuff is excellent, but I can’t get into their new stuff, I’ll trade ‘em for Hot Hot Heat . But it’s a show at Kilby, and I’m not one to say no to that. I did have a good time, but I couldn’t really hear the vocals for Say Hi, and a lot of their charm relies on the lyrics and I missed out on that. They did a number of cool things, though, including Eric playing “Yeah, I’m in Love with an Android” by himself, about third song in because somebody wanted to hear it and had to leave. The also did away with the silly rock tradition of leaving the stage before coming back to play two more songs. As a reward for their honesty, we gave ‘em a “One more song!” chant anyway, while there were standing right there. And if you were curious, we asked Eric before the show why he changed it from Say Hi to Your Mom to simply Say Hi. “Because I got lazy.”
I do recommend giving Say Hi a listen. They have a good number of songs about vampires.

A quick mention of the opening acts:
The A-Sides, from Philadelphia, play pretty good shoegaze. The real benefit of seeing these guys is their drummer. He plays with a very personal style and a very fervent passion.

What really stood out about The Velvet Teen, from Santa Rosa, Cali, was the basswork. Being a three piece, the guitar is mostly atmospheric, though louder than one would associate with that word. The bass plays most of the least and has a sound similar to Muse (fuzzy and dominant). Their drummer throws down mad thunder, too, but differently from the A-Sides.

Langerado Music Festival : March 6-9, 2008, Big Cypress Indian Reservation

I recently got an email about the Langerado Music Festival. Do I need to say how excited I am about this?

If you read our recent post, you’d have discovered that LovetheMusic is based out of Tampa (and SLC, but thats Damon), and this Langerado festival is like, hours away. Not plane rides and hotels away, just a couple of hours in the car. And because its only hours away, that means me, the special boyfriend, and more of my friends can come this time. It will be awesome. There will be camping in Florida in March, when it hasn’t quite become balls hot yet. And I’ll get to see more of the Sunshine state, and this is in an area I’ve never been to before.

Nothing but positive vibes and goodness here.

An Official Website that’s worth a damn

Dresden Dolls WebsiteI fully intended to tell you all about the Say Hi (to your mom) show I went to last night at Kilby, but I got distracted by the Dresden Dolls website.  Seriously, it’s the website that I wish all my favourite bands had.  Most official sites are tragically neglected, and the ones that do get a lot of attention mostly get that attention from a “Fifth Beatle,” like Weezer’s Karl Koch.  I love Karl as much as the next Weezer fan, but it’s just not the same.  If you’re able to deal with purple text on a black background, then you’re in for a lot of Amanda-written content ( biography, responses to countless emails), a great collection of photographs,  lots of actual music (I especially appreciate the “You can tape if you share” attitude towards bootlegs).  There’s a noticeable effort to keep things from being hard-to-find, and a genuine appreciation for the fans.  There’s also a selection of hate mail that’s available, some of which Amanda has responded to, which is entertaining but also reminds me why I don’t participate in message boards anymore.
So, now you know what I was doing instead of reviewing last night’s show or working.  But I’m still thinking of you, gentle reader.

  • The funny thing about events scheduled for the start of any given month is that they sneak up on me. I don’t usually connect the end of one month with the start of another, and before I know it I’m going to see freaking Regina Spektor. How rad? So freaking rad. For the first time in a dog’s age I showed up in time to enjoy all the supporting act. Fellow named Jack from New York playing under the name Only Son. He was there by himself with a guitar, and when he played songs that needed more than just his guitar, he used his iPod as a backing band. Writing it now, it looks a little lame, but rest assured it was not. He even had a couple of conversations with it. It was highly entertaining, and his songs were excellent enough that I bought his album The Drop to the Top, and now you folks get to hear the song “Quiet Surrender,” which comes from it.Regina Live And how was Regina, you ask? Take a wild freaking guess. She sold out a venue that hosts bands like Puddle of Mudd and the Shins, but managed to make it as intimate as a show at Kilby Court. Just her and her piano (a freaking Steinway), and us. The big drawback to that is that In the Venue doesn’t have a courtyard where people can go out and talk during the show, like Kilby does. A show without thunderous drums and electrically amplified instruments allows the performer to hear you a lot better. That’s pretty cool if they’re taking requests, pretty lame if they’re “Just a quiet girl with a piano and pretty bad ADD.” Thus we were told a few times to “shut the f* up” (the best of these was in between hallelujahs on “Baby Jesus”), but she also paused to listen to a train pass during “On the Radio,” saying after the song, “I’ve never heard a train during one of my songs before. In New York, I’ve felt the subway under my ass a few times, but never heard a train.” Other highlights include the chair as percussion on “Poor Little Rich Boy,” tapping the microphone for rhythm on “Ain’t No Cover,” Jack from Only Son beatboxing on “Hotel Song,” and Regina being generally incredibly cute. I wrote down the set as it happened, I’ll be blogging it soon. Stay tuned, and do yourselves a favour: If Regina is coming to your town, you freaking go! Um, LovetheMusic is based out of SLC and Tampa. Just so you know.

While I was over at Culture Bully earlier, I noticed that his links list was organized by region, city, and state. I looked down to Florida to see if we were there (we’re not), and then it occurred to me to look under SLC, Utah, which is where Damon is based out of. Not there either. Not that that particularly matters, but I realized that our readers probably don’t know that we’re based out of Tampa, and Salt Lake City.

Well, we are. There you go.  I’m in Tampa for a few reasons, the most basic one being school. I go to University, yup. I think Damon is in SLC because he sort of ended up there, like an old Walmart bag. He’s a ramblin’ man of Utah, been going all over, sleeping on various couches in between going to shows and interning as a kind of shop dick at X96 in SLC. Fortunately for him, he’s done with his schooling. I still have a year. Well, realistically, a year and a half and I’ll have a B.A. that isn’t worth a shit in 2009.

Anyways, this is a good post to talk about a blog I found in CB’s list called Thanks Captain Obvious, or for short, Captain Obvious. It caught my attention because its based out of Pensacola, and I used to live in the next town over from the city, and I went to school there, too. Little weird. Also weird is that the music featured over there has a healthy mix of what we feature here, and these awesome Obvious Tapes posts, which have like 10 badass mp3s per post. What more could you want?

(Picture is from the Pensacola Bridge, or 3-mile bridge. Or whatever)

And yes, I spelled Burtney like that on purpose. I’m mad wicked.
