Dikanda :: Artist Spotlight

dikanda 2

I have no idea how I found out about Dikanda. Perhaps one of those serendipitous moments, where the internet throws something in your face, and you run away with it. I did find them on the internet, through their website. How I got there I don't know. But it was a beautiful thing. I've been listening to them for over a year now, and decided to share with you.

You know how you can ask someone, "What kind of music do you listen to?" And they'll promptly answer "A little bit of everything". Well, I think this falls under 'everything'. A band like this reflects my varied musical taste, although I am not ignorant anymore to the idea that one who listens to 'everything' really only listens to what they like. I can tell you what I don't like, and what I do, and here is something I do like, tremendously.

I don't know much about Dikanda, other than what I learned on their Biography page from their website. They are Polish, experiment in music of the East, are named from an African term that means 'family', and consist of 5 members, and have released 3 albums. Biographies don't typically interest me anyway; music is the main deal for me.

I've got some sample of their music up here, downloaded from their website. Check out their website and all about them, and if you are caught like I was after listening to their groovy stuff, buy an album.

For a short description: bellydancing, chanting, howling, mad percussion and Eastern, exciting stringed instruments. All in another language, and beautiful. Enjoy.

Sweet Waves // Sprout Soundtrack

A couple of years ago while I was visiting my best friend, she gave me a CD she purchased, telling me she thought I'd like it. She enjoyed it, too, but thought the boyfriend and I would like it a bit more, and she was spreading the music love, something I totally agree with.

She was spot on. Turns out she bought the CD because it was related to Jack Johnson, and back in the day she collected almost everything he produced. This happened to be a soundtrack that was done for one of his many surf movies (Thicker Than Water, The September Sessions). I quickly fell in love with it, and have listened to it on and off since. Since this month is one of those 'on' times, I thought I'd share the prettiness with you.

Where I’ve been and what music had ensued

So, I'm sorry about my absence of late.  I started my internship at X96 and also got a job at the kickin'est book store in SLC and I'm staying at my girlfriend's house until I get an apartment and haven't had much internet.  But I have been thinking about you wonderful people, and also enjoying some local music, and attending live performances.  So I'll try my best to get you updated.  First, lemme tell you a story.

About a year ago, my girlfriend, Katie, and I went to see House of Heroes and Blackpool Lights at Velour in Provo.  We were very excited for a couple of reasons: Blackpool Lights is fronted by Jim Suptic of Get Up Kids fame, House of Heroes has a song called "Katie Baby" which I've kind of dedicated to Katie [which is probably one of those inappropriate ones, but since it's got her name in the title, you know], and it was my birthday.  The exact lineup was kind of up in the air, but the two bands we wanted to see were there, so no big deal.  A local band, Victim Effect, was headlining, and a bunch of their fans were filling the club with eyeliner and stupid haircuts.  Having recently watched this video I was full of comments on the blackness of souls and breaking up.  During the last Blackpool Lights song there were a group of people standing by the stage, one of them leaning on it, back to the band, sending text messages.  Honestly, a little respect, please.  Jim Suptic was in a band that inspired maybe 75% of the bands these emo kids listen to, and this girls is here with her back to him, getting broken up with through text messaging.  Of course the band noticed, and as Jim was singing lyrics about not paying attention at all he made eyes at her.  That made me happy, but after Blackpool Lights finished very little else cheered me up.  I was being so snarky about the emo kids that Katie was more than a little embarrassed at the prospect of me being heard, so we dropped out and I left without actually hearing any of Victim Effect's music, but having a healthy distaste for their fans.

I told you that story so I could tell you this story.  X96 does a free summer concert series called 4Play, which features four local bands in a battle-type scenario, the overall winner of this battle wins a spot at X96's annual Big A* Show, which is pretty big exposure.  All summer things had conspired against me being in SLC and free enough to attend until a week or so ago.  The band performing that fateful night were The Explicit, a Suicidal Tendencies-style punk band, also reminded me of Suicide Machines without the ska, Nick Neihart and the Eye Candy, who had a bit too much country about them for fans of the third band: Victim Effect!  That's right, I was finally going to hear what all these kids from Provo with crappy haircuts were wetting themselves over.  You'll note that I didn't say anything about the fourth band.  This is because, after all the anticipation, and the wondering if I want Victim Effect to be any good or not, what I saw was truly appalling.  Once all the equipment was set up, enough to facilitate three, that's right three, guitarists and keyboards (including a keytar), the band lined up, all five of them that weren't bound to a drum kit, and after a little count in, all this frustration, curiosity, and anticipation was relieved when they started, are you ready for this?  -> Synchronized headbanging.  It was the most ludicrous thing I've ever seen on stage, and having three guitars play a riff that really only needs one didn't help the matter.  The song itself sounded like a fairly rough early Avenged Sevenfold track or something.  Really was not worth all the hype.  And when they prefaced their second song by saying, "This one is for all of you fans, we wouldn't be anywhere without you!" like they were Metallica or something was really too much for my emo gag reflex and I had to leave.  So now I know there is something worse than Victim Effect fans' haircuts: Victim Effect.

To be fair, you should check them out for yourselves, and I'm only being fair to promote local music.  Utah can do a lot better, though, as you'll see the next time I find time to update for ya'll.

Marking Time :: John Butler Trio, India, and TV

Hello you lovely ladies and gentleman. It's been a while. We have some catching up to do.

First of all, I apologize sincerely for not bringing you awesome music in the past couple of weeks. Summer caught up with me, wrapping me up in romantic bedtime stories and lovely magical time with my significant other, thus distracting me from my responsibilities. And also, in all honesty, I haven't heard anything that really smacked me in the face, and made me feel I had to share it. One of my low points; it happens several times a year.

Forgetting all that stuff, let's get to the reason why I'm posting. One of my favorite albums is the reason. It be called "Marking Time", and features a lot of guess who? the John Butler Trio.

I actually discovered this album a couple of years ago, and take it for a spin quite frequently since I got it. A classic. Love it. Never gets old. It has this funky mix of JBT's music and Indian pizzazz, and the other artists featured on the album, such as Khalil gudaz, Martin Armiger Band, and Oumou Sangare rock the hose too.

I actually never even heard of the ABC miniseries that this soundtrack is supposed to be for, I just somehow found out that JBT was featured on it, so I wanted to check it out, and was not disappointed at all. Keep in mind that if you're someone that doesn't dig Indian sitars and other such trippy mellow stuff, you may not like. I, however, love that stuff. Can't get enough. Thus, I share. Be glad I'm so nice.

We have 3 tracks here to check out. If you like what you hear, drop me a line and I'll let you listen to another one. Enjoy, folks.

P.S. I figured out why we never saw it. It was in Australia. Duh.

P.P.S. This album has JBT's version of "Across the Universe" on it. Sweet deal!
